Kirk Laughlin

Senior Trial Attorney

Kirk Laughlin is a Senior Trial Attorney with the Poppe Law Firm.® Kirk is from metro Louisville and grew up in suburban Goshen, attending public schools from kindergarten to senior high. Following his graduation from high school in 2006, Kirk attended the University of Louisville, where he studied History and Political Science. While in college, Kirk was active in the UofL Moot Court Team, Student Government, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and the McConnell Scholar’s program. He spent two summers interning in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration and in the U.S. Senate. Kirk also spent a summer studying abroad at Renmin (“the People’s”) University in Beijing, China and teaching at an orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. During his senior year of college, he worked part-time as a file clerk at the Poppe Law Firm..

After his graduation from UofL in 2010, Kirk attended the University of Kentucky’s Rosenberg College of Law. At UK Law School, he was heavily involved in the National Moot Court Team, participating in and winning awards at various competitions, including being ranked first place at the National Energy Law Moot Court Competition and being rated the top oral advocate for UK Law’s Class of 2013. Additionally, Kirk was involved in various student groups, including the Trial Advocacy Board and the UK Law New Building Campaign. Despite his three years at UK in Lexington, his Cardinal red never faded.

While in law school, Kirk clerked for Kentucky’s Twelfth Judicial Circuit Court, including Henry, Oldham, and Trimble Counties, where he experienced first-hand the ins and outs of the judicial system. Kirk came back to clerk for the Poppe Law Firm® in the Summer of 2012 and again in 2013, when he studied for the Kentucky Bar Exam. After passing the Kentucky Bar in October 2013, Kirk was invited to join the Poppe Law Firm® as an associate attorney.

Since 2013, Kirk has been heavily involved in working for the Firm’s clients, taking nearly a dozen cases to trial (and successful verdicts), handling potential “call ins,” managing and arguing motions in trial courts and in appeals, taking numerous depositions, and effectively managing his clients’ cases to either a verdict or a settlement. Kirk is always willing to answer his clients’ (and potential clients) calls and try to figure out how the firm can help them with their case.

Kirk has been admitted to practice in the following courts:

  • Commonwealth of Kentucky, all District, Circuit, and Appellate courts
  • U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky
  • U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky
  • U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

Kirk is an active member of the Kentuckaina community, serving as a mentor to a “little brother” with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, a board member of a local community orchestra, and a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, Louisville Bar Association, Kentucky Justice Association, and Young Professional Association of Louisville.

Kirk and his wife, Sarah, a mental health counselor, live in Louisville with their two dogs, Lily and Julep.
