Jury Finds Nursing Home Responsible for Patient’s Death
After a weeklong trial a Cumberland County, Pennsylvania jury found a nursing home at fault for the death of an 85-year-old resident. The verdict awarded $250,000 to the family of Bruce Love in a suit against the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home.
On February 5, 2014, Dove was in a wheelchair waiting near the dining room entrance for dinner to be served. A supervising registered nurse asked another nurse to push him into the room. The second nurse, however, pushed his wheelchair fast and recklessly down the hall without warning or attaching footrests, a violation of safety standards. Dove was flung from his wheelchair, hit his head and broke his neck. Dove was then rolled over by nurses who failed to immobilize him and was put back in his wheelchair then later moved to his bed. Because he was moved without his neck being properly immobilized, he suffered irreversible spinal cord damage. He died the next day at a hospital.
