Two Kentucky Highways Named Among America’s Deadliest

Interstates 75 and 65 were named among the Top-25 “Most Dangerous Highways in America.” In a report published by Teletrac Navman, a truck fleet management company, Interstate 75 was ranked as the 11th most dangerous highway in America, while Interstate 65 ranked as the 18th most dangerous highway.

The data from Teletrac found there were 1,070 deaths on Interstate 75 from 2011 through 2015 and 421 deaths on Interstate 65 for the same time period; however, these statistics are based on the entire length of each interstate. Interstate 75 travels from the Canadian border to Miami, while Interstate 65 travels from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico.

Most alarming for Kentucky drivers is Teletrac’s finding that Louisville ranks as the deadliest city on Interstate 65, recording 17 deaths along the highway from 2011 through 2015 and outpacing larger metro area including Indianapolis and Nashville. Teletrac reported Atlanta is the deadliest city on Interstate 75.

The findings should come to no surprise to Kentuckians who grappled with an increase in highway deaths in both 2015 and 2016. According to the Kentucky State Police, 36% of 2016’s highway deaths were caused by speeding or aggressive driving, while 23% involved distracted driving.
